Audition Guidelines
Auditions for the 2010-11 Fall Session will be held on June 5th and August 21, 2010 at Emmaus Baptist Church in Northfield by appointment. There is a $10 audition fee. Please call 507- 645-4311 for more information on audition guidelines and to reserve a time.
Below are the guidelines for each orchestra:
Haydn Orchestra:
- Play a one octave G, C, and D major scale
- Understand the concept of sharp and natural
- Play with low second fingers as well as low first on the E string
- Cellos - shift to IV position
- Basses - shift into III position
- Playing end of Essential Elements or Suzuki book 1 (if using other beginning book please contact orchestra director)
- Appropriate playing posture
- Violins and violas use a shoulder rest
- Use tapes on instruments if necessary.
- Play mostly arranged literature
Mozart Orchestra:
- Play a two octave C, G, and D major scales, and know how to play a one octave F major scale
- Understand the concept of the sharp, natural and the flat
- Violins play with low first fingers on the A and E strings
- Cellos shift into II, III and IV positions
- Basses play in III, II, and 1/2 positions
- Playing Suzuki book II and III, Essential Elements book 2, or comparable literature
- Appropriate playing posture
- Violins and violas use a shoulder rest
- Use tapes on instruments if necessary
- Could/should be starting vibrato
- Play some arranged literature
Bach Orchestra:
- Play most two octave major scales and be familiar with d, a, e and f minor scales
- Shift into any position on instrument (violins and violas need to comfortable in 5th position)
- Playing end of Suzuki IV, beginning book V and beyond, or comparable literature
- Posture does not need adjusting
- Appropriate violin/viola chin support
- Playing Vibrato
- Play non-arranged literature
